Bridges are vital components of the infrastructures in a society which, together with roads and tunnels, form a complete transportation network to link up various parts of the society. This network must continue functioning during and after a natural or a man-made hazard so that the lifelines of the society may be restored as soon as possible. Among all the components of the network, bridges are the most vulnerable to the actions of earthquakes or explosions. Hence, many bridge engineers worldwide are working into various ways to improve the structural performance of bridges under various hazards. In this session, new innovative technologies and knowledge on bridge engineering in hazard mitigation will be presented by world leading experts and engineers. Moreover, important topics on sustain construction, life cycle engineering and structural retrofitting using CFRP will also be addressed.
