Bundled Tower Structures and Their Applications In Sightseeing Towers

Prof. Fan has engaged in design and research of high-rise buildings and large-span structures for 30 years. He has completed a lot of structural design works of very important projects: Ningbo International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Tangshan International Convention and Exhibition Centre, New Capital Museum, Zhongguancun Financial Center, National Stadium "Bird's Nest", Suzhou Railway Station, Olympic Broadcast Tower, Shenzhen Jingji Financial Center, National Tennis Gymnasium "Diamond Stadium" etc.. He had completed more than 20 structural research projects, such as steel plate shear walls with rectangular openings, and retractable roof structures, etc. Prof. Fan has published more than 100 papers in national as well as international technical journals. In March 2001, Prof. Fan was elected member of the Institution of Structural Engineers, U.K.. Moreover, Prof. Fan was also awarded a Silver Award and a Commendation Award of the IStructE China Awards in 2007 and 2009 respectively.

Abstract

In this presentation, the concept of Bundled Tower Structures is introduced, and the corresponding mechanical models are described in details. It has been applied successfully in the Olympic Sightseeing Tower in Beijing which is composed of five towers of various diameters and heights, with a maximum height of 246.8 m. It should be noted that in some of the single towers, the height to width ratios do not meet the wind nor the seismic resisting requirements. In order to ensure structural integrity as well as to enhance lateral stiffnesses, the five towers are connected together with several trusses. Hence, a bundled tower structure is formed which improves significantly its resistance against overturning, satisfies the requirements of deformation control under wind loads, and establishes structural safety of the structure under strong earthquakes.
