Concrete Filled Steel Tubular Structures under Extreme Loads: Research and Design Approach

Prof. Han is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University, and he has served as Department Head since 2010. Prof. Han works extensively on theoretical and experimental structural performance of steel-concrete composite and hybrid structures, and he teaches a number of undergraduate and postgraduate courses on composite and hybrid structures, structural fire safety design, disaster and disaster prevention. Prof. Han is the author/co-author of over 100 international journal papers. Moreover, he is the sole or lead author of four books, and the inventor of 22 patents in China. Much of his research has been supported by competitive grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) as well as from industry.

Prof. Han played a leading role in the drafting of several Chinese design codes on composite structures. He is a member of the Standards Committee, Ministry Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China (MOHURD) which develops structural standards and specifications. His research contributions have been recognised by a number of prestigious awards/prizes in China. Currently, Prof. Han serves on the Editorial Boards of 5 International Journals.

Abstract

Owing to the tremendous infrastructure developments in China over the recent decades, concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) structures have been widely employed in high-rise building construction. This presentation will provide an overview on the key findings of a number of major research programmes on CFST structures undertaken at Tsinghua University over the last decade. These topics include: a) structural performance of CFST members subjected to monotonic as well as cyclic loadings, and fire loadings; b) effects of long-term loads and pre-stresses in steel tubes on CFST columns; c) life-time performance of CFST column-to-beam joints under realistic loadings. Finally, applications of modern CFST construction technology in high-rise buildings in China will be illustrated comprehensively.
