The IStructE Conference on Structural Engineering in Hazard Mitigation is jointly organized by the Institution of Structural Engineers (www.istructe.org), Tongji University (www.tongji.edu.cn), Tsinghua University (www.tsinghua.edu.cn), and the IStructE China Group. The Conference will be held in Beijing on 28 and 29 October 2013, and in Shanghai on 31 October and 1 November 2013 featuring keynote lectures as well as presentations in parallel themed-based sessions.

The Institution of Structural Engineers (www.istructe.org) is the world’s largest membership organisation dedicated to the art and science of structural engineering. The Institution has over 27,000 members working in 105 countries around the world. The Institution is an internationally recognised source of expertise and information concerning all issues that involve structural engineering and public safety within the built environment.

The Institution has three core values to support the roles of the structural engineers around the world:

  • Professional standards striving for continued technical excellence; advancing safety and innovation across the built environment.

  • Celebrating excellence and promoting greater understanding of the structural engineering profession by sharing the achievements and milestones of the industry with the public.

  • Sustainability supporting structural engineers as they protect, influence and advance environmental development responsibly.

The IStructE China Group was formally established in 2002. To better represent IStructE members and their interests in the major cities of China, three sub-groups were developed, and they are currently based in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Aim of the Conference

The Conference (www.istructeconference.org) aims to provide a technical platform for effective dissemination and exchange on fundamental research on design and performance of structural systems, and on new technologies for improving the behavior, safety, and reliability of structural systems and their resistances to natural and technological hazards. Moreover, innovations in analysis and model-based simulation of structural behavior and response, design concepts that improve structural performance, reliability, resilience and sustainability as well as applications of new control and monitoring techniques for structural systems are also covered.

Scope of the Conference

Presentations on the following topics will be made:

  • Earthquake (strong motion)
  • Earthquake (moderate seismicity)
  • Wind and waves
  • Fire and blast
  • Progressive collapse
  • Eurocodes
  • Bridges
  • Buildings
  • Foundations
  • New materials and systems

The Gold Medal is the Institution's most prestigious award and is given to an individual for exceptional and outstanding contributions to the advancement of structural engineering. Gold Medal 2013 will be awarded to Institution Fellow, Dr Man-Chung Tang for his outstanding contribution to the structural design of major long span bridges in many parts of the world exemplifying aesthetics, creativity and sustainability. The Conference is honoured to host the IStructE Gold Medal Address 2013, and Dr Tang will deliver his Gold Medal Address during the Conference in Shanghai.

Top five reasons to attend

  1. Hear for the first time key findings of the latest research and development on hazard mitigation of the international structural engineering community.

  2. Gain insight into practical design and construction technologies for long span bridges, high-rise buildings and special structures against natural and man-made hazards.

  3. Discover current global trends and modern international codes of structural engineering like Eurocodes.

  4. Network with leading universities and design institutes as well as construction companies in China.

  5. Recognize new demands and directions for development, and connect with the world's leading professional body for qualifications and standards in structural engineering: The Institution of Structural Engineer, and attend the IStructE Gold Medal Address 2013.

The Conference has been endorsed by the Practice Qualification Registration Centre (PQRC) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development that Conference attendance is counted as 20 hours of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

经建设部全国注册工程师管理委员会审批,本次会议可按20学时计入注册工程师继续教育选修课学时(注工结构秘函[2013] 1 号).
